What does tandem skydiving feel like? Now, there’s a million-dollar question.
Deep in the recesses of the mind are memories of our experiences that can be brought to the surface and felt in real-time. For example, you can probably imagine with ease the feeling of a nice warm breeze across cheeks. Maybe you even wince at the sharp thought of stubbing your toe. Perhaps, you are even able to call up the prickling feeling of evolutionary fear that creeps up your spine as you wade deeper into the vast void of the ocean, inching closer to the watery realm of creatures at the top of their food chain. Those with particularly impressive imaginations can even use these sensory echoes to make inferences on how something completely unfamiliar will feel. Despite this uncanny ability, for the majority of people, nowhere along the expanse of this spectrum of sensory understanding can they pinpoint what tandem skydiving feels like. Here’s why:
Tandem Skydiving Feels Like Flying and Falling All At Once
One of our favorite things about skydiving is that it feels like flying and falling all at once. The reason for this is a mix of physics and perception. Many worry that skydiving will result in the stomach drop feeling you get on roller coasters and other amusement park rides. Thankfully, it’s nothing like that.
During your skydiving freefall, you fall to the earth reaching speeds up to 120 mph within mere moments. During this time, your mind will be fully aware that you’ve exited an aircraft and in all reality are plummeting toward the earth. Yet, your mind will be bewildered because it won’t feel like you’re speeding through the air.
Though invisible to the naked eye, the sky is filled with more air molecules than you can even imagine. As you fall, you collide with these air molecules, and you end up experiencing something called air resistance. Because of this air resistance, you will reach a point where the force of gravity is countered by the force of the air molecules you are passing through. We call this terminal velocity. The feeling of these two opposing forces on the body is something akin to being supported on a cushion of air.
Tandem Skydiving Feels Like Complete Freedom
There aren’t many times in your life where you will be faced with a boundless horizon. Within this great expanse of blue stretching for as far as the eye can see is a view that makes you feel both infinite and infinitesimal at the same time. This is exactly what it feels like when you go skydiving. On a tandem skydive, there are no walls and no limits. Bound by nothing but physics, in these moments, it feels like the shackles of the world below are cast aside.
Tandem Skydiving Feels Like Waking Up
The humdrum of the world has a way of lulling us to sleep. While by all medical definitions, we are wide awake, the way we drone about our day seems more like sleepwalking than living. Monotony has a way of preventing us from really experiencing all life has to offer, and it takes something truly special to stir a person from this comfortable daze. On a skydive, you really wake up. The slumber of tedium is set aside to be replaced by a desire to take in as much of you can of this bright, exciting existence.
